Hunter Region Through the Lens of a Newcastle Photographer

David Diehm Photography Newcastle

Welcome to David Diehm Photography Newcastle, where storytelling through imagery is at the heart of everything David creates. Based in Newcastle since 2006, David is passionate about capturing photographs that evoke emotion, inspire connection, and reflect the natural beauty of the world around us. His journey began in 2012 when his late father loaned him a camera for his honeymoon in New Zealand—a simple gesture that sparked a lifelong love of photography and an appreciation for its power to preserve meaningful moments.

Self-taught and photographing for more than a decade, David is not your typical photographer. Rather than chasing awards, he sees photography as a form of therapy, a creative outlet, and a way to connect with people and place. Inspired by nature and the diverse landscapes of the Hunter, his work captures honest, moving moments that are grounded in reality and shaped by a deep respect for the region he calls home.

For David and his young family, time outdoors—exploring, trekking, and discovering—is both a passion and a grounding ritual. In a fast-paced digital world, he values slowing down and reconnecting with nature, using photography to notice the intricate details and sweeping vistas that are often overlooked. Each image he creates is more than just a photograph; it is a story, a memory, and a celebration of the natural world. His hope is that his work encourages others to pause, reflect, and rediscover the wonder that surrounds them every day.

“The natural beauty of the Hunter Region provides an abundant playground of opportunity to pursue my love of photography”.

A Journey from Griffith to Newcastle

David Diehm’s upbringing instilled in him a deep appreciation for the country lifestyle, shaped by his early years in Griffith, NSW. Although a country boy at heart, David pursued tertiary education in Sydney, completing both a Bachelor’s and Master’s degree in Chiropractic at Macquarie University.

After five years in the city, he felt a strong pull back to the sense of community and connection found in regional life. In 2006, that journey led him to Newcastle—a place offering the perfect balance of coastal beauty, lifestyle, and opportunity.

Today, David operates a well-established chiropractic practice in Hamilton South, which also serves as the collection point for his photography products. With a longstanding commitment to health and wellbeing, he takes pride in supporting individuals and families across Newcastle and Lake Macquarie in living active, pain-free lives.

David is recognised as a trusted and top rated chiropractor in Newcastle, known for providing professional, compassionate care tailored to each individual’s needs.

Proud to Call the Hunter Home

For David and his family, the Hunter is more than just a place—it’s home. They live it, love it, and take great pride in the lifestyle it offers. From its relaxed yet adventurous spirit, pristine coastline, and untouched national parks to the serenity of Lake Macquarie—the largest coastal saltwater lake in the Southern Hemisphere—and the rural charm of the Hunter Valley, the region continues to be a constant source of inspiration.

David and his wife Kathryn, a dedicated primary school teacher, have called the Hunter home since 2006. Now living in Lake Macquarie with their three young children, they embrace every opportunity to explore the natural beauty around them. Kathryn has a keen eye for wildlife and portrait photography, and her perspective often enriches the way David views the world through his lens.

David’s passion for photography, combined with his deep appreciation for the region, brings him immense joy in capturing and sharing the unique beauty of the Hunter. He considers himself incredibly fortunate to live here and genuinely believes there is no better place to call home. His work is regularly shared on Facebook and Instagram, offering glimpses of the stunning landscapes and everyday moments that make the region so special.
