About David Diehm: Capturing Stories Through the Lens

I am a Newcastle-based photographer passionate about capturing images that tell a story and connect with my audience. My journey into photography began in 2012 when my late father loaned me his camera for my honeymoon in New Zealand. Spending time in nature, trekking, and exploring comes naturally to me, providing a sense of peace and fulfillment. With a camera in hand, I instantly felt a connection and enjoyed pushing creative boundaries to capture nature’s true beauty.

My early interests in photography were focused on landscapes, seascapes, and wildlife. Over time, influenced by my growing family, I expanded my work to include portraiture.

Exploring and discovering nature is a cornerstone of our young family’s life. It’s how we connect and teach our children about our wonderful planet. In an age of increasing technology use, I believe we must “disconnect” to connect with mother nature. Photography is my way of connecting and expressing the deeper beauty in everything around us. Each image is unique, capturing a fleeting moment in time that can be preserved for people to enjoy, provoke thought, or reflect upon for years to come.

“The natural beauty of the Hunter Region provides an abundant playground of opportunity to pursue my love of photography”.

A country boy at heart, I spent my childhood in Griffith, NSW. My upbringing instilled in me a deep love, respect, and appreciation for the country lifestyle. After completing high school, I pursued tertiary education in Sydney. After five years of study at Macquarie University, I graduated with both a Bachelor’s degree and a Master’s in Chiropractic. My fascination with city life quickly waned, I yearned for the country town feel, and in late 2006, I discovered Newcastle. Passionate about health and helping people live active lifestyles, my family and I run a well-established chiropractic practice in Hamilton South. David is a top rated Chiropractor in Newcastle.

For many, including my own family, the Hunter is home; we live it, love it, and are proud of it. We deeply appreciate the lifestyle it offers, from its laid-back yet adventurous atmosphere, pristine beaches and coastline, untouched beauty in the national parks, to the tranquility of the largest coastal saltwater lake in the Southern Hemisphere, and the picturesque country charm of the Hunter Valley.

As a photographer, my connection to this beautiful region is best expressed through imagery. My passion for photography, combined with my growing pride for our region, brings me immense joy in capturing and sharing images of the Hunter. I genuinely believe there is no better place to live and feel so privileged to call it my home.  I regularly showcase my work on Facebook and Instagram, sharing the stunning landscapes and moments that make our region special.

My wife, Kathryn, a primary school teacher, and I have called the Hunter home since 2006. We reside in Lake Macquarie with our three young children and take advantage of the abundant opportunities to explore nature around us at every chance. Kathryn has a keen eye for wildlife and portraiture photography.

I find tremendous enjoyment in photographing and sharing my images of the vastly differing landscapes across the Hunter. I truly hope you can find a connection with some of the images and the picturesque locations we are privileged to enjoy in the Hunter.

The collection of images you will find in my portfolio have taken years of dedication but facilitated so much enjoyment during their creation. I hope my images can create a connection, inspire or move you in some way.

Welcome to my journey depicted in images, enjoy.
