The Story Behind “Celebrating the Hunter”

David Diehm has called the Hunter region home since 2006, raising his young family amidst the breathtaking beaches, lakes, and landscapes of Newcastle, Lake Macquarie, Port Stephens, and the Hunter Valley. His pride and passion for the region inspired him to capture its beauty through photography — and ultimately share it with others in a book.

In September 2021, David self-published his debut 80-page hardcover coffee table book, “Capturing The Hunter – Newcastle & Surrounds”, showcasing both iconic and hidden landscapes of the region. The project began as a personal passion — a small idea he thought would be “cool” to see in print. The book quickly sold out, leaving David reflecting on how he could create a more comprehensive Newcastle Photography Book that celebrates the Hunter region’s unique spirit.

By late 2024, he published “Celebrating the Hunter”, a 200-page hardcover Hunter region book designed to showcase the full diversity of the area. Motivated by the lack of photographic publications highlighting Newcastle and the Hunter, David wanted to create a book that documents and promotes the region’s landscapes, vibrant communities, and lifestyle — a book locals, workers, and visitors could be proud of.

To fully celebrate the Novocastrian spirit, David also interviewed three prominent local personalities who agreed to be featured. Their stories complement the imagery, uniting photography with lived experience and highlighting the lifestyle, pride, and character of the Hunter community.

Through this work, David hopes to inspire a connection to Newcastle and the Hunter region, bringing its landscapes, coastal charm, and community spirit into homes, offices, and public spaces — creating a lasting publication that can be treasured for years to come.

“More than a photography book, Celebrating the Hunter is a tribute to the places, people, and spirit that make this region home.”
